Mindful Movement

Yoga Moves MS

I’ve been practicing yoga since 2005 when my college roommate and joined a 6-week intro course at the rec center. In 2017 I became a yoga teacher and in 2019 I noticed my balance felt “off” during a month stint at Denver Yoga Bikram. By the time I was diagnosed with MS in 2021 it was hard for me to stand on one foot or balance in a lot of standing postures.

I took more than a year off teaching and practicing and when I was ready to dip my toe back into the world of asana, adaptive yoga was ready with open arms. Mindy Eisenberg is the founder of the nonprofit Yoga Moves MS which offers daily donation-based virtual yoga classes. She’s also the author of Adaptive Yoga Moves Any Body, which brings the 84 asanas to the floor or chair with special consideration of the needs of people with neuromuscular conditions like MS.

Art + Culture

Fiber Arts

I added a Thursday night art class to my weekly schedule with a lovely fiber artist name Menna. She completed her undergraduate degree during the hight of the pandemic and specializes in macrame and crocheted clothing.

I’ve been three times so far and I love how each week is a discrete project that’s started and finished in 3 hours. So far I’ve made a macrame feather, a woven wall hanging and a crocheted coaster. Over the course of the three hours the dexterity in my left hand diminishes and I get slower as the task at hand becomes more difficult. We break for tea and I chat with the other students, mostly women of a certain age, about happenings around town, glass blowing and love spoon making, gallery openings and shows coming through. It’s a lovely group and a great way to practice fine motor skills that results in something beautiful.
